SMC Pyrenees Plunder 2008

 

Day 1 Friday 29th August - 70 miles / 2 hrs 0mins

Depart from SMC Sheffield at 3pm for Hull and the ferry, which leaves at 7pm. We will need to arrive at least one hour prior to departure in order to check in for the overnight crossing. Relax in one of the bars onboard and enjoy the entertainment provided. A cabin is included with this crossing.

 

Day 2 Saturday 30th August - 260 miles / 5 hrs 20mins

Arrive in Zeebruge approx 8am (local time) and ride to the first hotel in Troyes. We will mainly be using fast Autoroute today. Don’t forget to put clocks on by one hour. We can indulge in a meal and a couple of beers during the evening!

Day 3 Sunday 31st August - 260 miles / 5 hrs 20mins

Depart from Troyes at 9am for our next hotel in Limoges, again mainly using fast Autoroute, with a visit to Oradour sur Glane planned during the afternoon. A historically significant village, frozen in time since 1944, following the chilling events that occurred there during the German occupation. We will have plenty to chat about during tonight's refreshments!

Day 4 Monday 1st September - 260 miles / 5 hrs 20mins

Depart from Limoges at 9am for our accommodation in Lortet. Today's route will be a mixture of Autoroute and Route Nationale roads. Unwind and enjoy the hospitality provided by Ian and Alison and relax for the rest of the afternoon, or explore the local area at your leisure.

 

Day 5 Tuesday 2nd September - 100 miles / 8 hrs 0mins

Depart at 10am for the Col d’Aspin, Col du Tourmalet. Absolutely stunning and dramatic scenery, the best the Pyrenees has to offer. Treat this route with respect huge drops from hairpin bends, tight, twisty, breathtaking and guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience! This is why we love the Pyrenees! Return to Lortet for a few beers and some excellent home cooking!

 

Day 6 Wednesday 3rd September - 120 miles / 8 hrs 0mins

Depart at 10am for the scenic ride through the 3KM long Bielsa tunnel from France into Spain, enjoying the excellent mix of French and Spanish roads and the superb scenery. These roads are a real pleasure, guaranteed adrenaline if you want a fast blast, certain relaxation if you just want to take in the stunning scenery. A visit to the walled town of Ainsa in Spain for lunch before enjoying the same route back to France Lortet for (yes you've guessed it) more delicious grub and beer! Well, it is France after all!

Day 7 Thursday 4th September - 250 miles / 8 hrs 0mins

Depart at 9am for Encamp (Andorra). Autoroute to begin with, then an excellent ride up the ever climbing, increasingly twisty road, to enjoy the shopping in Encamp, or explore the City of Andorra if you prefer. After some duty free shopping we will ride on to our next hotel in the beautiful, historic town of Carcasonne. If time permits, this is a beautiful town well worth exploring.

Day 8 Friday 5th September - 270 miles / 8 hrs 0mins

Depart 9am for the Millau Viaduct, the highest and longest suspension bridge in the world which has won acclaim for its engineering and design. A must see landmark to make your toes curl and your bum cheeks nip! Then ride on to Clermont Ferrand to our next hotel.

Day 9 Saturday 6th September - 350 Miles / 10 hours 0mins

Depart 9am for Dieppe. Once settled this is a pleasant location to relax before the final leg of our journey.

Day 10 Sunday 7th 240 miles / 4 hrs 0mins

Ferry departs from Dieppe at 7.30am (Again we need to be at check in an hour prior to departure) arriving back in the UK (Newhaven) around 10.30am, then the ride home. Don’t forget to turn clocks back by one hour.

Times include rest and fuel stops and are of course approximate! Breaks will be dictated by the type of roads being used and the requirements of the group as a whole will be considered where possible.

Feel free to separate from the group if you wish and rejoin later. Riding speeds between riders will vary as will required rest and fuel stops. Remember, this is a holiday, relax and enjoy it.

 

Route cards will be provided and any planned routes, times and destinations will be used as a guide in the event of unforeseen circumstances. It will be left to the discretion of each individual, should they wish to deviate from this itinerary.

 

Please study the routes carefully. Should anyone be split up from the main group for any reason, it may not always be possible to back track and assist you. If this situation arises, make your own way to the next planned hotel to rejoin the main group.
